Dear California Teaching Commission:
My name is Briana Ronan. I am an Associate Professor of Education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I am writing to provide public comment on agenda item 3A.
I am also a member of the CARE-ED, the California Alliance of Researchers for Equity in Education network.
My public comment is in support of CARE-ED’s petition demanding an immediate and permanent end to high-stakes standardized-testing mandates in teacher education. These standardized tests have not proven to be a valid and reliable in predicting teacher quality; but they do disproportionately filter out students of color and function as a tool for oppression and exclusion. In place of these tests, I urge you to implement the following recommendations:
Provide opportunities for university coursework, supervisor evaluations of work in schools and/or community settings, and experience addressing issues of diversity and justice to determine eligibility for program entrance and completion. Furthermore, I ask you to support institutions in developing and implementing their own criteria and process for ensuring that diversity and justice are at the heart of admissions.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Briana Ronan
